Winslow Homer, the famed American illustrator and painter, was sent to the frontlines of the Civil War in 1861 by Harper’s Weekly. His task was to provide illustrations for publication. Between 1861 and 1864 he produced a series of prints that became known as the Campaign Sketches. These images provide a glimpse into the everyday lives of those participating in, and affected by this tragic war.
