Since 2012, Soviet Dolls has pierced a hole in the Rochester music scene with its blend of trippy, electronic beats and cosmic songwriting style. Its debut, full-length album, "Dream in Rhythm," released November 2018, is a collection of new, previously unreleased tracks as well as remastered versions of older tracks that feature original vocalist Hannah Gouldrick.
Soviet Dolls resembles a darker Postal Service, using poppy, electro-dance beats that drive forward into climactic choruses, with unexpected changes in tempo and atmosphere. Fans of the band can enjoy familiar songs like "Dreams" and "Broken Laces" with newly added backing harmonies and synthetic arrangements. One of the previously unreleased tracks, "Nothing Is Forever," is filled with densely textured electronic production and catchy melodies, offering a much more pop-oriented explosion of sound than the older tracks. "Foolish" is another new track that stands out with brighter chord progressions and lyrical concepts.
"Dream in Rhythm" sheds a new light on bright, interwoven bass lines and spectral synth washes before dissolving mysteriously back into the astral void. While this album is a mishmash of new and old songs, the band's definitive sound remains cohesive. Soviet Dolls bridges unlikely sections together in a provocative pop experience.
