THEATER | Sankofa Theatre Festival

by

The Sankofa Theatre Festival (also formerly known as the Sankofa Evening of Theatre and Jazz) has for the last nine years staged works by Rochester African-American and Latinx playwrights, and is now entering its 10th year with more than 40 original one-acts and six full-length plays under its belt. The event has long held a mission to give opportunities to Rochester-based black playwrights, directors, actors, and technical artists. Produced by MMB Theatre 1 Project, an arm of Mood Makers Books, the Sankofa Theatre Festival will open Thursday, August 24, with an opening night reception, jazz performances, and the staging of "Details in the Water." The full-length play by Grace Flores follows two women in the 1970's who "overcome tragedy and survive, however they can."

The "Red Carpet Opening Night" event begins at 5:30 p.m. with the play starting at 7:30 p.m. "Details in the Water" will be performed again Friday, August 25, and Saturday, August 26, at 7:30 p.m. Two other featured full-length plays will be performed as well: Karen Culley's "Kaleidoscope" on Wednesday, August 30, and Friday, September 1; and "A Safe Distance from Love," by Laura Thomas, on Thursday, August 31, and Saturday, September 2.

The Sankofa Theatre Festival takes place Thursday, August 24, through Saturday, August 26, and Wednesday, August 30, through Saturday, September 2, at MuCCC, 142 Atlantic Avenue. All show times at 7:30 p.m. Opening night reception is $25 in advance and $30 at the door; all other shows are $16 advance, $20 at the door.
