Playwright Ntozake Shange's Obie Award-winning 1974 play "for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf" is what the author describes as a "choreopoem" — 20 separate poems choreographed to music and dance, and performed as monologues. It relates the experiences of seven African American women, identified only by the colors they are assigned, living in a racist and sexist society, and tackles such issues as rape, abandonment, abortion, and domestic violence. The piece will be performed this week by the North Star Players under the direction of David Shakes.

"for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf" will be performed at the Multi-Use Community Center (the MuCCC), 142 Atlantic Avenue, from Monday, October 15, through Friday, October 19, at 7:30 p.m.; and on Saturday, October 20, at 4 p.m. Tickets are $15, and $10 for students and seniors.
