HOLIDAY | July 4 Celebrations

Summer is officially in full swing, so it's time to dig out that Old Navy Independence Day T-shirt — you know, the one that you only wear once a year. Sports-inclined folks can start their evening festivities at a Red Wings game at Frontier Field, and then stick around for the post-game fireworks. In downtown Rochester, the Judah Sealy Band will kick off the evening, followed by the impressive Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. Following the Rochester tradition, the RPO is set to play patriotic tunes, and the celebration will conclude with a dazzling fireworks display on the Main Street Bridge over the Genesee.

The Genesee Country Village & Museum (1410 Flint Hill Road) will also hold its one-of-a-kind celebration to commemorate the Fourth. The GCVM will fire a 100-pound anvil into the sky, host a pie-eating contest, and orate the Declaration of Independence with gusto; however, the most patriotic part of the day will be the swearing in of new American citizens on the Town Hall steps.

Suburban Rochester also has plenty going on to celebrate Independence Day. In Brighton, athletes can start the day with a 5K followed by a full schedule of activities with food vendors, games, face-painting, live music, and more fireworks. Brockport will hold a children's parade featuring both big band and patriotic music, and Chili will put on its annual "Chil-E Fest" with its own parade and a car show.

The Red Wings game starts at 7:05 p.m. at Frontier Field (333 North Plymouth Avenue) with a pre-game autograph booth, and tickets are $12. The Judah Sealy Band will go on stage at 7:30 p.m., the RPO at 9 p.m., and fireworks will be set off at 10 p.m. The best locales to view the fireworks are the Main Street Bridge, Broad Street Bridge, Chestnut Street near the Washington Square Garage, and any surrounding streets.
